Celaya FC was founded in 1954 and initially played in the Segunda División Profesional. In 1957, the team moved up to the Mexican Primera División by defeating Club Deportivo Nacional with a score of 2-1. The club hit a dry patch in the sixties and spent quite a few years in the lower divisions. Its poor form and financial problems led to its dissolution in the 1970s. However it was soon reformed and by 2008 was back in the second tier of the Mexican league.
