Al Green is a legendary American gospel and soul singer, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and an ordained pastor to boot. Born and raised in Arkansas, a young Green formed a gospel quartet with his brothers at the age of 9, which toured in the 50s to a relative degree of success. Green was forced to quit the band, however, as punishment by his father who caught the youth listening to Jackie Wilson records, an inappropriate and sinful musician in his conservative eyes. By 16, Green has formed another band, this time an R&B group that managed to produce a hit single, but failed to release anything commercially successful afterward. Al Green finally broke off on his own to pursue a solo career and the rest is history.
