Founded in 1998, the Rockets Gotha began playing in the Bezirksliga. The club plays its home matches at the Messe Erfurt. It received its first promotion in 2005. Another promotion came in 2009-10 when the basketball team made it to the ProB. The Rockets won the 2011–12 season of the ProB and were promoted to the ProA for the next season. In 2017, the club advanced to the Basketball Bundesliga but was relegated for the next season due to poor performance.
