Inspired by the BBC documentary, Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, this strikingly entertaining musical focuses on Jamie Campbell and his undying desire to become a drag queen. Witty, gracious and brave as he is, Jamie New, as he is called in the play, tackles and dismisses an array of homophobic remarks from school bullies and even his own father. The poppy score is written by Dan Gillespie Sells, with lyrics by Tom MacRae. Although complete with a perpetually-brazen aura, this play is subtly-themed around queer identities, the politics of gender identity.
