Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, is a full-contact fighting sport that allows grappling and striking both standing and on the ground. The fighters use techniques culled from various combat sports including traditional boxing, jujutsu, judo and muay thai. The first use of the term "mixed martial arts" used used by television critic Howard Rosenberg in 1993 when he was recapping an event hosted by the fight promotions company Ultimate Fighting Championship during their inaugural tournament.
