Drag racing is a form of motorsport that originated in the USA. Originally held illegally, it achieved the status of an organized sport for the first time in California in the early 1930s. Competitors race in pairs along a straight-line course and the first to cross the finish line is declared the winner. With growth in the popularity of the sport, over a hundred categories – determined by the specification of the vehicle used - have developed.
