First performed in France in 1670, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, by Molière, tells the story of a middle-class man who strives to be part of the aristocracy. In order to achieve this, he wears expensive clothes, takes classes on philosophy and takes up fencing, all to mediocre results. Of course to everyone around him, this is all a hilarious and rather pathetic farce.
