First performed in 1666 at the théátre du Palais-Royal in Paris, Le Médecin Malgré Lui is a comedic farce which brings to light the absurdities of 17th century medicine. The main protagonist, Sganarelle, is a poor and boorish woodcutter who gets roped into pretending to be a doctor to cure the ailments of a wealthy nobleman's daughter. However, he has no clue how to treat a patient, so he simply pretends--to hilarious results.
