A team that hails from the Friesland region of the Netherlands, SC Heerenveen was established in 1920 as Athleta. Since its inclusion into the Eredivisie, the club has had little success, except in 2000 when Heerenveen finished second. The club won the Tweede Divisie once and the KNVB Cup in 2009. The team takes the pitch at Abe Lenstra Stadium and its main rival is nearby Frisian team SC Cambuur and to some extent, FC Groningen.
