The team was founded in 1920 and since the 2013-14 season it has played in Serie A, along with a group of other teams not part of a provincial capital including Empoli, Cesena, Legnano, Pro Patria and Casale. In 2013, the team began playing home matches in Reggio Emilia at Stadio Citta del Tricolore.
