One of French Football's most popular clubs, Nîmes Olympique has enjoyed a fair amount of success in the top two tiers of the league. Established in 1901 as Sporting Club Nîmois, the team enjoyed a relatively successful spell in its early years. It was renamed as Nîmes Olympique in 1937 after a change in ownership and more success duly followed the team. Nîmes first major trophy came in 1950, when it won the Ligue 2 championship, but would have to wait for almost five decades before it could get its hands on silverware again. The club has also produced a number of world class players, such as Eric Cantona and Laurent Blanc.
