La Donna del Lago is an Italian opera that's based off of the French translation of Sir Walter Scott's poem, The Lady of the Lake. Written by Gioachino Rossini with a libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola, the production imagines an incident in which James V, the King of Scotland, encounters the Lady of the Lake while traveling through his kingdom in disguise. The first Italian Opera to be based on a Scott's masterpieces, La Donna del Lago premiered in 1819 and went on to be a pioneering influence on Italian romantic opera.
