A football club from the Åland Islands, IFK Mariehamn plies its trade in the Veikkausliiga - the highest level of the Finnish football league system. Established in 1919, the team spent its early years playing in local tournaments in Aland, before joining the Finnish league in 1945. The team's rise to prominence began in 2003 in the Kakkonen (third tier). Two years and two promotions late, the team found itself facing the country's top teams in the Veikkausliiga. It won its first ever top flight league title in 2016.
