Football Club Baník Ostrava, is one of the sixteen clubs that compete in the top-tier football competition of the county, the Czech First League. The club is based in Ostrava and uses the Městský stadion as its home ground. It was founded as SK Slezská Ostrava in 1922 and initially competed in the lower leagues. Although the club had monetary restraints during its early years, its talented players continued to deliver and in 1937, the club debuted in the First League. Through its history it has won the Czechoslovak Champion title and the Czechoslovak Cup many times and has also had memorable runs in the UEFA Cup.
