Even though Umphrey’s McGee is typically categorized as a jam band, the group isn’t what most people would expect a band of the jam variety to sound like. Yes, the six piece from Chicago carries its songs into extended instrumental endeavors. But Umphrey’s cites groups like King Crimson, Yes and Genesis as influences--not Phish or The Grateful Dead. When the group plays live, serious musical prowess is on full display, especially from guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger, two virtuosos who battle one another with their instruments. Formed at the University of Notre Dame in 1997, Umphrey's McGee has since grown into one of the more formidable acts on the live music scene, thanks to a relentless touring schedule that keeps the band's chops honed and polished.
