Founded in 1982 as the Macquarie Bears Ice Hockey Club Inc., the Australian amateur ice hockey team adopted its current name, Sydney Bears, in 1997. It competed in the NSW Super League and the East Coast Super League before becoming a member of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) in 2000. Based at the Macquarie Ice Rink, in the suburb of Macquarie Park, Sydney, the team has won the Goodall Cup, the H. Newman Reid Trophy, the Wilson Cup, the V.I.P Club and the NSW Super League.
