A collaboration between New York indie folk artist Kevin Devine and Georgia rocker Andy Hull of emo rock outfit Manchester Orchestra occurred when Devine supported Manchester Orchestra on tour. After penning a few tunes, Devine and Hull convinced the other members of the Orchestra to join in and the two groups took a temporary hiatus from their main projects, respectively, to produce a full length album and supergroup under the guise Bad Books. Relying primarily on hype, the band gave several interviews and released tentative track listings in an attempt to build buzz before releasing its full length, which dropped in fall of 2010. Their second album II was released in 2012 and their third, III, dropped in 2019 after a seven year interval.
