Though still only a strong presence on the underground hardcore scene, NYC based quartet Descender takes its name from a typographic term, which is fitting considering the four band members' primary profession is graphic design. Though the music they create is broadly categorized as hardcore, it draws influence from '90s punk rock and utilizes elements unusual to the hardcore scene, like Sonic Youth walls of sound and heavy metal riffs. Receiving impressive acclaim, Descender is slowly coming out from the underground and spreading its angular but melodic music throughout the US.
