When American singer/songwriter Bill Callahan, also known as Smog, first started making music, he was extremely interested in various lo-fi methods of music composition. Claiming to simply prefer the aesthetic of lo-fi recordings, Callahan would use shoddy instruments, out of tune guitars and DIY home recording methods. As time wore on, however, Callahan started to understand that his unique brand of Americana tunes would be best captured with more professional techniques. Now, the songwriter's material is crisp, clear and this new sound has attracted a wider audience, helping Callahan out financially and allowing him to continue the life of a indie singer/songwriter.
