Songwriter and singer Akiko Yoshida began playing the violin and piano at age two. The Tokyo based star, who performs under her stage name, Kokia, was essentially raised as a musician. After coming to the US to study in music programs along with her sister for two summers she eventually majored in opera. Kokia grabbed the attention of Pony Canyon records, who subsequently released her first album in 1999. While Kokia didn't gain national fame until signing with Victor Records and getting multiple singles on various commercials and video games, the singer was catapulted to world fame in 2004 when the critically acclaimed anime film Origin: Spirits of the Past used two of her songs in its soundtrack. Known for her delicate voice and ultra feminine demeanor, Kokia has found a fan base throughout Asia and European markets.
