When the original members of Unrest formed in 1983, the Washington DC based band was highly experimental and often carried out improvisational jams during concerts. As time wore on, though, the group's sound began to incorporate elements of pop into its repertoire. But this by no means made the group's sound easily accessible. The avant-garde approach to pop music was extremely minimalist, but also fairly upbeat, which made the group a favorite amongst fans of fiercely independent music. The band has called it quits on a number of occasions, but still manages to play rare shows that capitalize off the group's original approach to music and the members' frenetic onstage chemistry.
