Design For Living is Noel Coward's 1933 play that he promised to write to star Lynn Fontanne, Alfred Lunt and himself back when the three were all nobodys on the streets of New York. Once the trio had each individually found success, Coward decided it was time to follow through with this promise and composed a darkly witty romantic comedy involving a love triangle of artists moving from bohemian Paris to the high society of Manhattan. Initially banned from the UK for its potentially promiscuous nature, Design for Living instead appeared on Broadway to rave reviews. By 1939, UK censorship had decreased and the play received its premiere there, also to wide acclaim. Directed by Anthony Page, the latest rendition will run at the Vic Theatre in London.
