Niobe is an opera written by the highly skilled Italian composer Agostino Steffani. First performed in Munich in 1688, Niobe was considered a masterful piece of work that properly captured Steffani's deep knowledge of music and stage dynamics. The play was unfortunately lost in the annals of history for centuries, not receiving the proper amount of attention it deserved, until it was rediscovered in 2008 and staged at the Schwetzingen Festival. Ever since that fateful re-staging in 2008, Niobe has received a lot of attention from opera aficionados and is considered to be one of the greatest musical stage pieces written by an Italian in the 1600s.
