Son Volt is an alternative country band that was founded by lead singer/songwriter Jay Farrar, after his former group Uncle Tupelo, broke up in 1994. Creating songs with a defined Midwestern twang, the band released its debut album Trace, in 1995, and quickly became a noted fixture on the indie scene as one of the flag bearers of alternative country. After years of non-stop touring throughout the 1990s, Son Volt decided to take a hiatus in 1999, but eventually returned in 2005 with a revamped lineup and its fourth studio album, Okemah and the Melody of Riot.
