Darren Hayes is an Australian signer/songwriter based in the UK who rose to fame as the lead singer of pop duo Savage Garden in the 1990s. After the success of Savage Garden's 1997 self-titled debut album, which spawned several hits including "Truly Madly Deeply," the duo released one more album before splitting up in 2001, leaving Hayes free to focus on his solo career. He released his debut solo album Spin in 2002, offering fans a Savage Garden sound with less rock and more R&B influences. Though the album reached Top 5 in Australia and the UK, it failed to be commercially successful in the United States. He released his heavily electronic followup album, The Tension and the Spark, in 2004, marking the beginning of his electropop sound. Hayes eventually moved closer to his sweeping and emotional Savage Garden sound with his 2011 album, Secret Codes and Battleships, which was met with critical acclaim.
