After failing to achieve commercial or critical success during its formative years with a foray into hardcore punk music, The Beastie Boys transitioned into hip-hop and managed to become one of the most popular hip-hop acts in the world. The band's 1986 debut LP License to Ill is one of the cornerstones of the modern hip-hop movement and is widely considered to be one of the best albums ever made. Following the release of License, The Beasties managed to stay relevant by touring frequently and releasing a consistent flow of reputable albums. In 2012, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; one of the only three rap groups to have been granted this honor at that time. Sadly, that same year band member Adam "MCA" Yauch's untimely death sealed the fate of the Beastie Boys who disbanded soon after.
