Giacomo Puccini's Il Trittico is composed of three one-act operas: Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. Il Tabarro takes place in a barge on the Seine, where one dockworker finds out that his beloved wife has been having an affair with another fellow longshoreman, prompting him to a murderous and vengeful rage. Suor Angelica tells the sad tale of a nun who entered a convent after having given birth to a child out of wedlock and tarnished the family name. When her sister cruelly informs her of her dead son, Angelica is gripped by the vision that her child awaits her in heaven, and thus, she resolves to commit suicide by poisoning herself. Afterwards, she realizes that suicide is a sin and pleads to the Virgin Mary for forgiveness before meeting her death. But her prayers are answered: the Virgin Mary appears, along with Angelica's son and the two are finally reunited. Of the three, Gianni Schicchi is similarly tragic, but more of the comedic variety: Gianni Schicchi and his family plot to finagle the inheritance from the family patriarch Buoso Donati; but much to the dismay of the family, Schicchi shrewdly awards himself the biggest shares.
