Morgoth is a death metal band from Meschende, Germany that was formed in 1985 by Rudiger Henneck and Carsten Otterbach. The group's name is taken from the epithet of the dark lord Melkor in J.R.R. Tolkien's middle-earth stories. After playing a large number of shows during its formative years, Morgoth would eventually release its debut album, Pits of Utumno, in 1988.
