Austrian-born composer Hugo Wolf was an expressive artists whose contributions to Lieder are unparalleled. Lieder is the German word for art music, a branch of European romanticism. Wolf came out of the tradition of Wagner's innovative intensity and mastery of form, colliding with the waning days of European romanticism. Known by some as "Wild Wolf," Wolf's moodiness and sharp personality drew out contempt from some of his peers, but ultimately became the core of his dark, rich expression until his death in 1903.
