One of the great fingerstyle guitarists of all-time, John Fahey was a unique musician who combined traditional folk, blues and country with occasional bouts of avant-garde experimentation. Born in Washington D.C. in 1939, he was raised in a musical household with regular exposure to bluegrass music. His early material became an underground sensation within the folk community, as scarcely-produced albums such as Blind Joe Death introduced listeners to his haunting style full of heartfelt acoustic picking and sparse, effective ambiance. Using a combination of original material and spins on traditional standards, Fahey maintained an unpredictable quality throughout his career, able to go from pleasant to dissonant, familiar to experimental or grounded to exploratory at the drop of a hat. In later years, Fahey's influence over modern folk and indie movements began to pop up, evidenced by his collaborative work with the experimental musician/producer Jim O'Rourke, known for his involvement with groups such as Sonic Youth and Wilco. He died in 2001 at the age of 61, but the mark his instrumental guitar playing left on several genres of music continues to be felt.
