Dusty Springfield (born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien) was a British vocalist who is now regarded as one of the quintessential female soul singers of all-time. She grew up comfortably in a secure middle class family in North London, where she earned the nickname "Dusty" from peers due to her tomboyish nature. Raised by her parents on a steady diet of classical and jazz, it wasn't until she discovered the torch songs of Peggy Lee that Springfield decided to pursue a career in singing. Her 1963 hit "I Only Want to Be With You" announced the presence of a new jazz-influenced pop singer whose pure and expressive voice was capable of tackling a swath of different tones and moods. Over the years, she would develop the more soulful sound she's come to be known for, perfectly encapsulated on hits such as "Son of a Preacher Man," which she recorded for her classic 1969 Dusty in Memphis album. Though her popularity ebbed and flowed over the decades, Springfield continued to record and perform up until her death from cancer in 1999.
