Singer, actor, comedian, provocateur, director, producer, arranger--Frank Sinatra, known as "Ol' Blue Eyes" or "The Chairman of the Board," was a man of many talents. Starting off his career in the 1940s, amid America's infatuation with swing music, Sinatra became one of the poster boys of the scene and an idol of many young female fans, who called themselves "bobbysoxers." Though his professional recording career stalled by the 1950s, he was able to enliven his career with appearances in a number of films, probably most notably his academy winning portrayal of a soldier serving in Hawaii during World War II in From Here to Eternity. Known for his carousing with Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. in Las Vegas with their Rat Pack gang, Sinatra created a mighty reputation for himself during his heyday, and although he retired in 1971, he'd eventually come out of seclusion for a number of successful albums and tours to help galvanize his career.
