Neu! was an experimental rock band from Germany that was formed by multi-instrumentalists Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother. Though the band never received widespread commercial success while it was active, it is now considered one of the pioneers of krautrock. Dinger and Rother played together in the krautrock band Düsseldorf and decided to start a new music project together. Neu!'s self-titled debut album, released in 1972, never sold many copies but is considered a classic masterpiece by rock legends including Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Thom Yorke. Creative differences split Rother and Dinger's musical aspirations and the band's final album before an attempted comeback in the 1980s, Neu! '75, went in two different and conflicting directions: side one was an ambient experiment headed by Rother, while side two featured an aggressive guitar-heavy sound led by Dinger. The band's final studio album was Neu! 4, the result of recording sessions from the 1980s that was finally released in 1995. Dinger and Rother were never able to reconcile their differences for long enough to record any new material before Dinger passed away in 2008. Neu!'s use of the Motorik form and dynamic rhythm guitar have made lasting effects on experimental rock, the UK's punk rock scene and electronic music.
