Galaxie 500 was an American alternative rock trio that managed to release three well-respected albums during its existence from 1987 to 1991. Though the three members of the band had all met whilst in prep school, they started playing together when they were all studying at Harvard University. During the early stages of the band's life, a drum set had to be borrowed from one of the member's roommates--who happened to be the famous talk show host Conan O'Brien--and this kit can be heard on many of the group's early recordings. Galaxie 500 released its debut album, Today in 1988, and it was well-regarded by many as a good piece of music; although, many consider the band's cornerstone LP to be its sophomore effort, On Fire. With a characteristic sound that blends psychedelic rock guitar styles with ethereal sonic overtones, many have dubbed the groups music "slowcore" or "dream pop."
