Polvo was one of the most respected bands in the noise and math rock genres during the 1990s. The Chapel Hill, North Carolina group formed in 1990 and helped define some of the touchstones of its genres, such as jittery, time signature-shifting rhythms, angular guitar work and quirky song structures. In addition to the band's ADD-riddled music, singers Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski lent strange and surreal lyrics to the already off-kilter proceedings. Polvo disbanded in 1998, but not before heavily influencing a number of groups that would come after, such as Minus the Bear, Cursive and Pretty Girls Make Graves. The band reunited in 2008 with new drummer Brian Quast and released a new album, entitled In Prism, in 2009.
