Over the past century, its been extremely rare for the Zydeco genre to seep into the mainstream musical lexicon. The unique style of music, with cultural ties to Louisiana and the Southern United States, is a form of roots music and has an extremely distinct sound. One musician who managed to bank off the unusual music style is the accordion player and singer Buckwheat Zydeco, who was one of the only musicians to break into the mainstream by performing Zydeco music. He got his start in the '50s by backing several prominent musicians, and by 1971 he founded his own group called Buckwheat & the Hitchhikers.
