Jets Overhead

Some ambient rock groups get it all wrong. Most are either too mellow or too abstract. The Canadian band Jets Overhead somehow manages to get it right, though. By combining downtempo instrumentals with fairly upbeat rhythms and highlighted vocals, the group has managed to hit a sound that many groups attempt to achieve: dreamy alternative shoegaze . The group released its debut LP, Bridges, in 2003 and ever since then the band has been busy touring and working on new material.

We’ve had a lot of fun digging through the archives to honour our 15-year anniversary and we’ve saved the best(!) for last. “Boredom and Joy” is track 3 on The Timing: 15 Years of Jets Overhead, our new retrospective double album out now on Spotify, Apple Music, and on vinyl/CD at jetsoverhead.com.This is a never-before-seen Jets Overhead music video, directed by William Eggleston III (@eggleston3) and shot in Los Angeles in 2012. Inspired by the opening lyric, “I want to see where the river goes / take a paper boat to the coast,” sit back and take a first look at the full video on YouTube! (link in bio!) Boredom and Joy was our first experiment with sequencing and looping recorded parts in the studio. While past albums were based on live band takes, Boredom and Joy was built one instrument at a time via overdubbing, with the band never actually playing together at once (other than in pre-production rehearsals). The unique drum sound was the result of producer Emery Dobyns (@emerydobyns) deconstructing and recording each part of the drum kit separately, and then reconstructing the best in the studio. That process, along with hints of electronic production in the rhythm section, gave the song some of its originality, and 6 years later it sounds like it might have even been a little ahead of its time.You can now find this previously unreleased Boredom and Joy music video on our website, and please check out our first new song in 6 years, “The Timing,” out now on @spotify, @applemusic, @googleplaymusic, and all major services!x Adam, Antonia, Jocelyn, Luke, and Piers
