Although the band's Canadian-born lead singer, Jonathan Clancy, sings exclusively in English, Settlefish originated in Bologna, a town in north eastern Italy. This indie-band was among the first Italian groups to be recruited by an American record label when Deep Elm signed the group in 2003. The same year, Settlefish participated in the "Too Young To Die" tour, organized by Deep Elm and the American Association to battle suicide among young people. The tour corresponded with the band's first album, Dance A While, Upset. Settlefish released two more records with Deep Elm before signing with Unhip Records, under which they released their 2007 album, Oh Dear!, which highlights the band's American rock influences.
