Stella is a comedy troupe consisting of David Wain, Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black. After meeting at college in New York City, the trio joined a handful of other young comics to form The State, a popular television sketch show in the 1990s. After that project ended, Wain, Showalter and Black formed Stella as a means of continuing to pursue their mutual love for absurdist and nonsensical comedy. Nightclub performances became legendary around New York City in the late-1990s, and by the mid-2000s, the trio had landed a deal with Comedy Central to produce a show based on their act. Although the show was a failure that lasted only a handful of episodes, it has since become a cult favorite on DVD and led to the trio reuniting at various times to perform again for a live audience.
