This story has origins in the dramatic poem of the same name written by Lord Byron from 1816 to 1817. He never intended it to be staged, but its transition to the theater has been warmly welcomed. Schumann musically adapted the poem in 1852 and Tchaikovsky later wrote Manfred Symphony, Op. 58. The show is most commonly Schumann's version, creating a perfectly poetic atmosphere that Byron himself would have appreciated.
