Smash Mouth is an alternative rock band that emerged out of San Jose, California in 1994. Incorporating elements of pop punk, ska, new wave and rap into its sound, the band released it debut album Fush Yu Mang, in 1997, catching national attention with the singles "Walkin' on the Sun" and a cover of War's "Why Can't We Be Friends." Smash Mouth catapulted itself to the top of the mainstream rock charts with its subsequent 1999 album Astro Lounge, which offered a stronger pop sensibility and less ska influences with tracks such as "All Star." Though the band has since lost much of its commercial appeal, founders Steve Harwell and Paul De Lisle remain at the helm of the project and continue to release Smash Mouth albums including the band's seventh studio album, 2012's Magic.
