Donald Jay "Don" Rickle was born in 1926 to Jewish parents who spoke Yiddish at home. After a brief stint in the US Navy during WWII, Rickles started pursuing a career in acting after he was dishonorably discharged in 1946. Frustrated that he was not getting enough acting work in the early 1950s, he began doing stand up comedy work--where his natural ability as an "insult comic" was truly realized. Audiences found Rickles brand of humor more laughable when he was picking on hecklers and calling them by his characteristic "hockey puck" idiom. With a career that has lasted over a half-century, it's safe to say that with a rude and fairly offensive style of humor Rickles, has proven himself as one of America's beloved comedians. Refusing to retire, he kept up a robust touring schedule up until his death in 2017.
