The renowned television series American Idol first aired in 2002 on Fox as the American counterpart of the UK talent show Pop Idol. The show is essentially a talent competition determined by audience voting via telephone, the internet and SMS texting as well as a panel of judges. Within the program's first few seasons, the original American Idol judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell had become household personalities recognized and referenced throughout pop culture mediums. The show became the first series to maintain its spot as the number one watched program for eight consecutive seasons. In the shows tenth season in 2011, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler joined Jackson and replaced Cowell and Adbul as judges in an attempt to reformat and re-engergize American Idol, which had already catalyzed a number of talent competition shows such as The Voice, The X Factor and So You Think You Can Dance. American Idol acts as a stepping stone for its winners, several of whom has gone on to become prominent artists in the entertainment industry including five-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood, Grammy Award and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson and of course, the two-time Grammy Award winner and the iconic winner of season one, Kelly Clarkson.
