By blending art pop sensibilities with avant-garde musical leanings and a love of deep African rhythms, the German duo Schnaak makes a unique style of music that is equal parts experimental noise and well-crafted instrumental music. The group released its debut LP, Women on Ships are Bad Luck, in 2009 and the album helped establish the two members of the band as musicians who are willing to push the envelope with their nontraditional approach to playing. When performing, the two members typically confine themselves to a drum kit and guitar, but the manic noise that the duo is able to create sounds like a cacophonous amalgam of several instrumentalists intent on confusing listeners with a myriad of tones and strange sounds.
