There's something to be said for musicians who build their songs around the perfectly blended interplay of voices rather than spending too much time worrying about the backing instrumentation supporting it. Such is the case with UK project The Staves, a trio of sisters who create timeless-sounding folk songs that rely on little more than rich melodies and quietly effective harmonization. The group will often bring its sparse arrangements to life via the simple inclusion of a lightly strummed acoustic guitar or ukulele. It debuted in 2012 with Dead & Born & Grown, this album showcased the band's attention to vocal elements of folk music has earned the trio comparisons to legendary performers such as Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris.
