Moss is a doom metal trio from Southampton, England that derives its influence in characteristic doom fashion from the occult and the classic horror mythology of H.P. Lovecraft. The group formed in 2000 and because the majority of doom metal acts are from the Scandinavia region, Moss has since grown to become one of the more respected and prolific independent acts performing doom metal in the English language. An interesting piece of trivia concerning the Moss' extremely bass-heavy music is that the trio is ironically devoid of a bass player, relying instead on utilizing heavy bass frequencies as a more than effective replacement. The band's most celebrated album release is considered by many to be the heavily Lovecraft-inspired LP Cthonic Rites, which almost perfectly captures the band members' skill in the doom metal genre as well as their profound respect for the writings of the father of modern science fiction.
