Formed by Green Gartside in 1977, UK band Scritti Politti has a long history, an ever-evolving musical style and a highly inconsistent lineup--Gartside has been the only stable member. Initially leaning toward underground post punk, Scritti Politti shifted toward the decade's standard cheesy pop in the 1980s, garnerning multiple hits on the UK and US charts. In the 1990s, after a move to New York, the band dabbled in polished funk and hip-hop with political lyrics. After the dawning of the new millennium, though, Gartside's enduring band took on the decade's interest in indie rock and became a favorite with fans of more underground, experimental music. While Scritti Politti might be a band reflective of its surroundings, its ability to continuously translate these surroundings into well-liked music marks Scritti Politti as a band that likely isn't fading anytime soon.
