Earl Zero is a Jamaican reggae artist who helped establish the roots of the genre in the 1970s. He was born in Kingston in 1953, the oldest of his parents' ten children(!). Self-taught, he eventually began to write songs with his musical partner, Earl "Chinna" Smith, with whom Zero collaborated with on the 1975 hit, "None Shall Escape the Judgement." The song became the most popular single in Jamaica that year and put Zero well on his way to becoming a stalwart of reggae music for years to come. His songs are traditional and true to the genre's classic structure, full of mellow upstroke guitar, percussion and tales of political and social strife. Over the years however, Zero has also worked in some other influences, particularly the thick bass-lines and heavy use of echo found in dub reggae. He moved to Northern California in 1979, where he has remained active and even worked with some notable musicians on the funk and jam band circuit, including The Greyboy Allstars.
