John Kadlecik is a singer/songwriter and guitar player from Council Bluffs, Iowa who might best be known as a founding member of the popular Grateful Dead cover band Dark Star Orchestra. Initially beginning his musical exploration by studying classical violin, Kadlecik would switch to electric guitar after moving to Chicago. Kadlecik played in a number of garage rock bands before becoming interested in jazz and folk music. Co-funding Dark Star Orchestra in 1997, the group was meant to be a one night a week project but it evolved into something else entirely. After more than a decade performing with Dark Star, Kadlecik left the group and joined Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh to form Furthur. During his solo endeavors, Kadlecik performs original material that is a clear reflection of his love for rootsy folk, jam rock and jazz.
