Hailing from Dublin Sinéad O'Connor is a singer/songwriter and musician who became one of the most influential women in alternative music during the late 1980s and early 1990s with her distinctive sound and brash demeanor. After releasing her debut album The Lion and the Cobra, she captured the attention of the music world with her alternative rock/pop sound and signature shaved head, and subsequently built a reputation on her often angry lyrics, her masculine appearance and her political views on religion, women's rights and war. Constantly challenging the culturally accepted image of femininity, she proceeded to make her mark on the world with her sophomore effort I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, in 1990, which held her international hit, "Nothing Compares 2 U." Though her widespread popularity and presence in the media have declined since the 1990s, O'Connor has since continued to release her brand of outspoken alternative music on records including 2005's Throw Down Your Arms and 2012's How About i Be Me (And You Be You)?
